Blog Post #83 - Newton believed in God, Einstein was the god!!! How Wonder land of Physics is intertwined with Chemistry!! #STEM

"Je n'avais pas besoin de cette hypothèse-là"

"Sir, I had no need for that Hypothesis"

Pierre Simon Laplace allegedly (love this word- makes no commitment if he said or not) to Napoleon.

What was he talking to Napoleon about? - you will know if you read this post!

CHON - Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen and Nitrogen pretty much makes up a large part of humans and other species - Organic Chemistry and add to that the other elements you get inorganic chemistry

When Chemistry combines and starts living ,multiplying and starts consuming earth's resource then we enter the world of Biology.

These creatures(including Humans) think about creation, walking, talking and you enter 'Physics'.
We assume that we are the only creatures who think about world and future. We don't include 8.5 million species including cows, tigers, mosquitoes, bacteria and all species we share this earth with.

“Einstein may teach you how to bend space and time, but only Newton will get you to Mars!” - A classic student fighting between Newton and Einstein.

Do you care if Einstein is better or Newton is better?
Einstein got an element named after him in periodic table

Element 99 Einsteinium, Es, discovered in 1952,the only element ever named after a living scientist.
No element has been named even today for Newton!!! Sir Issac Newton also never won Nobel Prize.

Do you know why?

Cos Nobel who made a lot of money by inventing dynamite made lots of money and he came to earth 100 years after Newton to the earth!

Read my  post on Mystery behind Chemistry at Link to learn about periodic table and elements named people.

#112 Copernicum, Cn, is named for Polish astronomer Nicholas Copernicus. and Uranium which is element

Uranus - the planet is represented in the periodic table uranium which is element 92.

These two elements are part of the story below on physics

Before we discuss physics let's stay with chemistry and its interaction with Physics.

When My son was very young - we went to a circus .  We saw people jump high and low. Many animals were missing and there was a small group of animal rights fellows outside who protested the Barnum and bailey circus in Austin . Lion , Elephant ,Monkeys, cats and dogs. The only species that was taken for a ride and was not protected were the humans. They were swinging bar to bar and rope to rope. I explained to my son about gravity and how what goes up must come down and sometimes what goes up comes down even without its will!.

The next due to his carelessness he fell in the staircase and he shouted 'Daddy,Gravity is pulling me down!'

I always like talking about Physics and learning from kids,  Just because Kids can teach and we can learn.

It doesn't work the other way around – adults can’t teach so kids can learn.

Go to facebook and find any photo tagged with your name and view the picture . Where does your eye go first? Your picture of all pictures in that group?

The world is not what it is but what we look for.

If you stop an adult off the street and ask what is the lowest particle each element is made up of, you might get answers like protons, electrons and neutrons.

Really. This theory on quantum physics is true – if this was still 1980.

With protons, electrons, neutrons as the basis quantum physics couldn’t have leaped to where it is today(Who cares?, we do- and we will learn about it in later blogs once I read more about them).

There are quarks, 3 Quarks forming 1 electron. 3 Quarks forming 1 neutron and there is also neutrino.
What is neutrino? - break an neutron and we expect a proton and an electron and natures gives us proton, electron and a neutrino.

It is really intriguing – empty space in space and empty space inside atoms .
Atoms – means indivisible and we have already divided that into electrons protons all the way to neutrino. Now there is string theory, wave theory, particle theory which keeps dividing these little fellows while we keep looking up to the stars and talk about galaxies and  their expansion. We see the move away from us – the galaxies. Where are they going? Why is the universe expanding? If we are in the milky way galaxy where is our sun? If you can imagine a spiral we are in the end of the spiral. More like a suburban area away from a downtown. So what is in downtown milky way ?  - Empty!

These come up Steven Hawkins and Neil Degress Tyson . Amazing scientist – who love to think in complex terms and explain in simple terms.

Physics – deals with questions outside and inside space – empty space and every particle along the way.

Now to Copernicus -  This man who understood their our senses fool us – was able to clarify that our earth is not the center. The Center is sun!.

This view is called Helio-centric view.  This other view is called geocentric view  - where earth is the center.

The scientist who could figure this out had to observe the planets and sun. See them move back and forth and not around us. Conclude that we are not the center. Propose a theory and follow up with data on sun is the center. Now before Copernicus could say this – he can be doubly sure that the Church and other entities who don’t like this non earth centric view will prosecute and kill him. So – he waited until dead bed ,proclaimed earth is not the center and died!

This way – he could be a voice of truth and not be killed(how could you kill a  man in his death bed?). Such was the plight of physicist.

We have astro physics, meta physics and quantum physics all other weird named physics trying to explain matter ,antimatter ,space, atom and every conceivable complex subject – so we can understand ,answer and ask more questions. Once we reach a point of understanding , in physics – another scientist will disprove and provide more. In Math, once proved always proved. In Physics that is not the case – labs ,real world experiment and mind are three tools that could be used for understanding.

So Copernicus gets his space in chemistry books and periodic table as element number 112.

Now to Uranium’s namesake Uranus.

Newtonian physics is an universal phenomenon.  Newton as I understand was not waiting for a falling apple. He had a problem to solve looking at the sky!

Why is the moon attached to earth? Why is the earth attached to Sun and going in circles ? Why are the planets revolving around sun?

So – this attachment and circular motion (perceived as circular motion but actual elliptical – again our senses fool us) .

Think about it – we don’t see earth  move , we don’t feel earth move- we have no clue about what is out there in space. With satellites we are now able to view from the outside in (zoom out and zoom in) and we see a new view . Hubble telescope named after Hubble has provided so many pictures now  - which has given us various views of the universe around us.

So while newton was thinking about moon – an apple could have fallen on his head, hand, body, shoulder or near him which made him think what is the basis of this movement. Gravity was the answer but this is not just Gravity. This is called Universal Gravity . The theory of universal gravity is applicable to all parts of the universe- atleast so they thought. The calculations held good for all planets and clearly explained the different orbits and positions for Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter.

A scientist who found Uranus couldn’t fit these calculations for Uranus and so he was sad(we don’t know – but why should the scientist always be curious!). Thus it was reasoned that we need another planet to explain this theory – Neptune. Spot 1 planet and get another planet for free!

We ended up now with Neptune and Uranus.

This – Newtonian gravity is true everywhere. Is it?

When it came to Mercury no one could explain its path. Again for few years it was theorized that there was another planet called Volcan (named after Volcano ). The scientist agreed that there might have been an asteroid which was misclassified as this planet and stepped back from that theory.

Here is where our Hero steps in – Einstein.

Einstein gravity is all about time and space. eqGravity instead of being 2 objects attracting each other he theorized that it is more like the spiral interwoven platform surface – the surface being gravity and what is under the surface is where these objects are pulling each other in space.

More like your bed and what is on the bed and not what is under the bed.

This theory helped solved the mystery for not just Mercury but even remote galaxies.

More on Einstein on next blog.

Einstein prove E=mc2.

Darwin’s theory and his book “On the Origin of Species” focused on why God may have not created humans directly as written in bible but as chimps and all lower level species which evolved into Humans.

Michael Faraday   a poor book binder proved that energy is conserved – in line with God’s wish. Electromagnetic theory and breakthroughs proved world has a fixed energy going from one form to another. Open a door – your energy is transferred to kinetic and sound energy (if your door is not well oiled!). Gun powder and corn the energy stored will be released as Mass and Energy can also become mass!

Take a spring/rubber band. Weight it.
Now stretch it and weight it.

It will weigh more and this additional weight is due to conversation of energy from your hand.  The amount of weight will be using speed of light *(times) Speed of light.

Can you imagine? If you can imagine and understand this concept – then you understand a part of theory of special relativity for which Einstein got a Nobel prize.

That leave us with Nobel – the man who has an element named after him called Element 102.He invented Dynamite among 355 other patents. With lots of wealth that he had amazed before he died he endowed 94% of his wealth. Do you know that he owned a company called Bofors?
Yes for Indians familiar with Bofors scandal this is a company which was owned by Alfred Nobel himself and you guessed it right – he was Swedish.

After his death his money was used to establish Nobel foundation to give prizes to best in
1.    Medicine
2.    Physics
3.    Chemistry
4.    Literature
5.    Peace
6.    Economics

There is no Nobel Prize for Math!! Did you know that?
Google and find out why!!

Blog Post #82 - To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked. #gratitude

My friend visited from one of the coldest regions in USA - Minneapolis to the blessed land of Texas he mentioned a quote which his colleague has said

"To whom much is given much is expected"

I wasn't sure what it meant and I am sure you have your own interpretations too.

What I was sure about is that this didn't come from his colleague in Minnepolis but from India , China,Arabia or Constantinople (Present day - Istabul).

oh - the Chinese - I will write a blog soon about them - lot of interesting stuff in human history happened in china independent of the rest of the world - gunpowder to paper to Confucius to record keeping.

What happened in Constantinople is of a great significance to humanity - folks sitting down down in a conference room (kidding) to write/revise and rewrite a book called Bible after 300 years after Jesus Died.
Neither was Matthew,Mark or Luke alive but their books were.

Are you ever curious "Did Jesus write Bible?"

I don't know the answer but the books that Mark,Mathew,Luke are well preserved as sayings of Jesus and contains what I consider eternal truth (religious books from all religions contain eternal truths - surviving centuries and passing truth as humans never changed for 'ages' )

While googling (now an official English word for past few years since oxford dictionary added it) I stumbled upon 2 of the most influential characters in History.
Bill Gates and JFK.

Some times this quote is attributed to JFK. JFK took inspiration from Luke's quote from the Bible.

The inspiration for Kennedy's famous observation, "For of those to whom much is given, much is required" can be found in Luke 12:48: "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required."

(Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/02/AR2006060201406.html)

Bill Gates - mom in her letter to Melinda during Bill Melinda weeding said this same quote.
http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eimh45ehjl/bill-gates-from-those-to-whom-much-is-given-much-is-expected/
Bill's mom it seems always pushed him to do more and give more.!!!

I truely believe he is doing that with more than $30billion of his charity work ,his intellectual power and his influential presence in stages/place where it matters  - showing up to do Philanthropy is a new concept according to me.

Rich people write checks - Rockefeller . World changers write check ,recruit people to whom they hand over checks, go and meet leaders and ask for permission and ideas to work on those geographical areas , work with other Fortune 500 leaders and request them to donate more , be trust worthy mentee of Warren Buffet and utilize his $30+ billion wealth and run it along with Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and take the hatred of so many people who complain about him!

Look at Bill's hiring stratergy and his investment in IV - Intellectual Ventures.

http://intellectualventureslab.com/

Bill has been recruiting hackers to kill mosquito's using laser guns.

Watch Paul Pablos discuss and show videos on
http://www.tedxtelaviv.com/2010/07/19/paul-pablos-holman-hacking-the-future/

Enough about rich people Bill Gates and Philanthropy . Lets talk about us - the normal people who live and die without much footprint.

The secret to happiness it seems is happiness is you guessed it right - gratitude .

Most of feel may feel we are not blessed.
The habit of counting your blessing is the hidden recipe for success .

Try it Today

Take a piece of paper or open your notepad in your computer and right now type 5 things you are grateful for.

Some suggestions

If you have a house - be grateful for that
Are you not sick today - be grateful for that
Do you have loved ones around you - be grateful for that
Do you have food to eat and clean water to drink- be grateful for that
Do you have money in bank account more than 0- be grateful for that

Health,Wealth,Food,Clothing,Shelter and company  sometimes taken for granted.
Teaching kids to be grateful for their toys, friends and school ( remember all kids don't go to school but your kids do!- did it ever occur to you?)

Most people reading this blog are in the top 30% of world's economic elite. 70% still struggle to live their daily life ( Statistics is never true - there is a statistics about how many statistics are true - paradox)

So in the morning and evening after you count your blessing and write in your journal or mind think what can you give?

To you lot has been given - now give back some to people who don't have any.

We tell our kids to share - do we share our wealth?

Let's not change the world and like mother Therasa says

“I never look at the masses as my responsibility; I look at the individual.
I can only love one person at a time - just one, one, one.
So you begin. I began - I picked up one person.
Maybe if I didn't pick up that one person, I wouldn't have picked up forty-two thousand....The same thing goes for you, the same thing in your family, the same thing in your church, your community. Just begin - one, one, one.”

Time to conclude with the parable from where it all starts. unless you are a christian you may not know this parable- if you are a hindu like me or Buddhist like me ( so what am i now?) or a Jew or a Muslim and it doesn't matter you read this parable as long as you got your concept right!

Now read this parable - which in short means a servant should always be ready to serve, Master should keep a watch and what I assume is second coming of Jesus.

Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning. Be like men watching for their lord, when he returns from the marriage feast; that, when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them. They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don't expect him."
Peter said to him, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?"
The Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has. But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn't expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn't know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful. That servant, who knew his lord's will, and didn't prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, but he who didn't know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

Blog Post #81 - Glass - you wear them, see them use them - they are your future(past and present)!!!

Wonder!!

Research suggests that people like their mirror image(the one they see on the glass called mirror) than their actual picture !

We love our mirror image while people like us for what we are!!!

Thomas, R & Sydenham, S. Glass. [Online] www.kidcyber.com.au (2009)

A recipe for glass•sand or silica (SiO2)
•sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)
•limestone (CaCO3)
•magnesium carbonate (MgCO3)
•additives to improve the quality of the glass, and to colour the glass.
While it is still molten (a hot liquid), glass can be manipulated by glass blowers to form bottles and other decorative articles of different shapes. They blow air into the liquid glass through a long pipe.

You can see a video of glass blowing at this site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoQh3r2fQ78

While simple chemicals make up Glass it is amazing to see that from smart phones to fiber optic cables from TV/computer screens to your car/home windows they are everywhere!!

From Gorilla glass to bullet proof glass from Google glass to Pyrex these glasses come in different forms.

The secret for Glass has been guarded in the past and it is happening again now.

What is the big deal about glass now ? Once you watch the 2 youtube videos you will be pleasantly surprised.

While Egyptians knew how to make glass and nature gave us glass as Obsidian  stones near the volcanoes we are far far away from the potential uses for glass.

Lots of research has been happening in the last couple of years and the future for glass looks 'bright'. Stay tuned

Blog Post #80 - Zero - our hero and what does Sthanam sthanam dasha gunam have to do with your bank account?

When something great is invented there needs to be a story.

From Eureka Archimedes running naked on streets when he understood buoyancy  to Newton who has a head hit with Apple ( I read somewhere that it is the apple tree which should have fallen on Newton saving us from Calculus and Laws of motion and not the apple from a student of physics!) all the way to accidental inventions.

So some intelligent fellow added this - Aryabhatta woke up from sleep and said "Sthanam sthanam dasha gunam"  - once you sleep you can dream and create wonders!!

Whether you believe in the neighbors and eyewitness who has seen Aryabhatta in India sitting in a bedroom and saying something in sanskrit relating to zero or you use an iphone to check your message you should know that zero is important not just for math but also for shopping!

While reading Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions ( a wonderful book and i am on chapter 2/3)  I stumped about the concept of 'FREE'.

I can paraphrase Dan Ariely but he is funnier and smarter ( a rare trait for intellectuals who explain complex stuff!) and I strongly suggest you read his blog at
http://danariely.com/tag/free/

FREE is not zero
The concept of FREE comes with a price. Have you collected FREE pens and souvenirs or drank a cup of coffee in a Car dealership because it was FREE? I did.

Zero is not a simple idea.

Imagine zero and its friend 1 - they rule the silicon valley and the world!

(if you are in silicon valley you believe that is 'the' world')

In effect every single character and every image that you seen in the screen is being represented by zero and 1.

Zero is nothing. Representing nothing is something!

Zero is  hero when it is next to the number on the right side and the more the zeros and  more happier the receiver is.

Here is the confusion - Brahmagupta  or Aryabhatta do you know who created zero?
While we can read online about these two folks Pingala pops up- invents representation similar to morse code with 1 and 0.

We don't know who was Pingala. But he was before the inventors of zero (or the indians who take credit for it) Pingala did wonders with Binary system and here is what his system was  something like this

23
Does it Divide by 2- no so wrote 1
We get 17.
Does it divide by 2  - no so write 1 to the previous 1 which makes it 11 (another 1 next to the first 1)
Now lets divide 8 by 2
Does it divide by 2 - yes so write 0  so it makes it 110
Now divide 4 by 2 - yes it divides by 2 so makes it 1100
Now divide 2 by 2 - 11000

So he was thinking in binary!!

Solved in binary and worked in binary!

Long Live  Pingala!

Shunya - nothing as known in sanskrit represents words that mean absence of number.

Sthanam sthanam dasha gunam  roughly translates to every zero added adds an extra times 10 (thank god for my rudimentary Sanskrit skill..did i tell you i learnt Sanskrit for 3 years and this is the best translation i have done with that knowledge!)

Thinking in zero is next to impossible. Writing about zero and combining with the words available in a language is a game in itself.

Notice when you say it is not there (your car keys) does not represent zero while there are 0 cars in the parking lot will still be 0 after a bike enters the parking lot.

An un-examined zero is not worth thinking!

Arabs spread the zero from India to the Europeans. While Newton and other folks complicated them with Calculus .

Read this from
 http://www.wtamu.edu/academic/anns/mps/math/mathlab/col_algebra/col_alg_tut38_zero1.htm

and you lose your interest in Zero once you see what the academics can do with zero.

Rational Zero (or Root) Theorem
If rational zero, where
rational zeroare integer coefficients and the reduced fraction rational zerois a rational zero, then p is a factor of the constant term rational zeroand q is a factor of the leading coefficient rational zero.

God save zero and our sanity from math

Blog Post #79 - Be yourself everyone else is taken!

Growing up physically(and now growing wiser mentally) I was asked "What will you be when you grow up?"

Now that I am grown up I  think  - What do you want to be when you get old?

We ask our kids what they want to be when they grow up. My son has changed from superhero to policeman to CIA agent to now a baseball player .

I can't imagine my son as a baseball player but he does.

"In the mind of the expert there are limited possibilities and in the mind of the beginner there are many possibilities" - from beginner's mind

Kids still want to be some one else. Adults want to be some one else.

I was once in a Kumon party (Kumon- an after school program and Party don't synch!) and before they showed the movie for kids they had a sales video about kumon in which they showed kids who did better using Kumon.

Then the instructor asked who wanted to be like that Girl who is doing some Physics bachelor's course and lots of kids raised their hands. (including my son). There was one kid who didn't. When asked she said something to the effect of ' I don't want to be her. I want to be me'!

Very profound. Some kids do understand they are comfortable in their skin being them. Most adults and other kids don't.

Quoting from Dan Ariely's blog and his book
http://danariely.com/tag/education/

According to Dan Ariely

We should teach the students, as well as executives,

How to conduct experiments
How to examine data
How to use these tools to make better decisions

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”

Derek Bok, the 25th President of Harvard

His take on education in the book made me think a bit more about path orientation education.

Kids who learn to become doctors are different from Kids who want to benefit humanity through better health.

When the education or the educator is focused on the second one we produce not doctors but professionals who will do everything from better environments, being an activist, fixing human conditions, writing books, giving lectures and educating the next generation of humans.

Path oriented life as a concept is what we may need after all!

Exercising gives  a good body. So what do you do with the muscular or healthy body? Use it to --- fill it up!

We want to live like our dads and moms, grand parents and super heroes.

Once we leave it is what we leave that may be important.

We consume the resources of this world and produce a lot of waste. We generate energy and use energy.

We admire others and want to be like and act like others.

It is said kids learn by how we act and not by what we say.
Asking them not to watch TV while eating while we snack while watching TV confuses kids(and adults too).

Out of 7 billion people living and 8.5 million species living and all things not living nothing and I mean nothing goes through their experience' the same way.

No two  things  living or non living will experience events the same way!

Your watch and my watch (for older folks), your smart phone and my smart phone don't undergo the same experience and neither do you and I.

Now it is your turn - what did you want to be when you were young ?
What do you want to be when you grow old?

Blog Post #78 - Bright Spot Analysis - Solution Based Problem Solving

The book that I am immersed currently is Switch -Chip Heath, Dan Heath
and the other book Decisive from the same author talks about this concept.

What is the big idea?

From highland.gov

The Basic Assumptions of a Solution Focused Approach.

  • It is not necessary to emphasize and explore the causes of problems in order to develop solutions.
  • There are always exceptions to the problem – times when things are better.
  • A small change can lead to bigger changes.
  • Everyone has skills and competencies, and can contribute – all views are of equal value.
  • Once you know what works – do more of it.
When you want to complain about something not working look for what is already working in your system.

If you are a project manager and people are not submitting timesheets on time check why the other people are submitting timesheet on time.
Why does someone who never submits timesheet on time starts submitting early on some weeks?

For a given problem - you can zoom out and look to other people or systems where it works or look inside your own system where it might be working from time to time on specific days for specific people!

When you want to solve a problem you need to answer the miracle question.

Before I talk about miracle question I want to paraphrase Prof Srikumar Rao and his derived philospohy of you must be happy all the time.
Here is the question

What do you need to be happy?

Money or Title or children or spouse?
Once you get that x (x is always the unknown) and when x is taken away you must be sad!!!

You get money = happy
you lose money = unhappy

It is tricky to associate your happiness to the external factor which can be given and taken at will(Not sure whose will? - God?)

Solution based problem solving has 2 components

1. Since nobody is perfect and no situation is perfect there will be bright spots
2. Answer the miracle question - Assume you sleep and a miracle happens and the problem is gone. What are some signs that will tell you it is solved?

Let's solve a problem using this framework

My son never eats and your daughter never does her homework( implying my son studies well and your daughter is eating all the time- ha ha!)

Does my son ever eat by himself?
Does your daughter ever do her homework?

Being imperfect means - when complaining about your spouse, your work or even your own workout or eating habits
you might notice bright spots on - times your spouse is nice, your boss is fine and you workout atleast 3 times a week or eat healthy.

This puts history to rest - even though I like talking/reading history sometimes you need to ignore history otherwise it will repeat itself!!

This helps find the bright spots and we need to shine out spotlight on them!

So what was different on that day when your daughter did her home work well?
What can you do to repeat this?
Do you see a pattern ?

Now to miracle! I like them and so should you!!

At 1:30am when tooth fairy walked and gave $1.25 for my son's tooth and you were sleeping your problem was solved - the miracle happened.

What are some of the signs you will observe that will show things have changed?

Start looking for these signs and this helps catching up with positive things than negative things.

Try it.

If you have become a health freak by tomorrow morning the signs might be - you will eat that apple, put down the donought and smile happily!

Have you allowed the miracle to happen yet?

Blog Post #77 - Mystery behind Chemistry and Wonder of periodic table - you are made of carbon.

1. My Chemistry - your chemistry - Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry - What are they?

2. What chemicals make up your body?

3. Peoples names in Periodic table - Do you know Nobel and Einstein have elements named after them and so is the person who created Periodic table .(His name is ??? and he is from?? - read along - Element 101 is named after him)

4. How can you teach Chemistry in the internet era to your kid and the kid in you?

1. My Chemistry - your chemistry - Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry - What are they?

I want you the reader to be smarter than a 5th grader (or 8th grader) .

 #STEM #CHEMISTRY

After watching a lot of Indians movies and interviews from actors and directors the only chemistry I know is between the Hero and the Heroine!

The new focus for kids in America is STEM - Science, Technology,Engineering and Math .

Kids learn a lot and that is their full time job and a boring one. We as adults have real full time jobs and for some it is a boring one too. Why not trade ours to the kids and start learning!

This time it is chemistry. Yes. the Chemistry which have equations, chemical reactions, atoms, elements and test tubes. Bunsen Burner - my favorite - the only fun companion for me in my chemistry class other than  - yes you got it Pipette and Burette.

I am not sure about you but I have drank a lot from these little instruments and became chemically active while inducing burns to my friends with our Bunsen Burner!

Chemistry is a branch of science which was very boring so boring that even today I wonder what was the purpose of this?

I spent quite a bit of time trying to find the  difference between organic and inorganic chemistry. While I never understood the real difference here is what I found

If something has carbon and hydrogen then it is organic chemistry.
If not inorganic chemistry.

Diamonds with carbon - inorganic. Why? I understood now that it has to have Hydrogen along with Carbon .It has to be Now I assumed all living things are part of organic chemistry.

Think-

Do you eat vitamins?

Vitamins ("vita" = life and "amine" = containing nitrogen) are organic (containing carbon, which is an element found in all living things) compounds (containing atoms of one or more different elements).

Minerals are pure inorganic elements (containing atoms of the same element), meaning they are much simpler in chemical form than vitamins.
All vitamins are essential or required by our bodies, whereas only some minerals are essential nutrients.

When you have bacteria which is a living organism you fight them using chemistry - yes. All paracetamols (for Americans - Tylenol For Indians in India - Chrocin ) are nothing but chemistry to fight biology!!!

If your body needs hormones it can be supplied from outside as chemicals into your body and fool your body it is part of its own!

BioChemistry is a branch which deals with this complexity.

Physics - When you walk fast and if you are fall down because of your carelessness then it is physics which governs gravity, mass, acceleration and your poor eyesight which can be associated with speed of light.

Who cares about speed of light and speed of sound and how these are different in water, air and in vacuum!

2. What chemicals make up your body?

Chemistry - Explains can explain What your body made up of?
From http://www.livescience.com/3505-chemistry-life-human-body.html

Roughly 96 percent of the mass of the human body is made up of just four elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, with a lot of that in the form of water. The remaining 4 percent is a sparse sampling of the periodic table of elements.

I was talking to my sister in India who teaches Math and was appalled to know the kids still use log tables.

Wow - Log tables and periodic tables . Do you remember them?

That bring us to Periodic table.

This is why we call it periodic table? Same periods for all elements in same row (Same number of electrons)

Currently there are only 7 rows in periodic table.

3. Peoples names in Periodic table - Do you know Nobel and Einstein have elements named after them and so is the person who created Periodic table .(His name is ??? and he is from?? - read along - Element 101 is named after him)

From about.com the following 13 elements were named after people

  • bohrium (Bh, 107) – Niels Bohr
  • curium (Cm, 96) – Pierre and Marie Curie
  • einsteinium (Es, 99) – Albert Einstein
  • fermium (Fm, 100) – Enrico Fermi
  • gallium (Ga, 31) – both named after Gallia (Latin for France) and its discoverer, Lecoq de Boisbaudran (le coq, the French word for 'rooster' translates to gallus in Latin)
  • hahnium (105) – Otto Hahn (Dubnium, named for Dubna in Russia, is the IUPAC-accepted name for element 105)
  • lawrencium (Lr, 103) – Ernest Lawrence
  • meitnerium (Mt, 109) – Lise Meitner
  • mendelevium (Md, 101) – Dmitri Mendeleev
  • nobelium (No, 102) – Alfred Nobel
  • roentgenium (Rg, 111) – Wilhelm Roentgen (formerly Ununumium)
  • rutherfordium (Rf, 104) – Ernest Rutherford
  • seaborgium (Sg, 106) – Glenn T. Seaborg
Ever wonder any other type of periodic table - the one below is of all of the presidents in USA.Contains  44 at the time of creation (which includes Obama). Gw- Gerorge Washington to O - Obama.(from the site http://mentalfloss.com/article/48677/9-periodic-table-parodies)

Now this is a periodic table that I like.
Colors blue for yes democrats and pink (not sure why they didn't make it red - it is always easy to criticize other people's work and not appreciate the effort!)

I grabbed a book from library titled
The Periodic Kingdom; A Journey into the Land of the Chemical Elements
by P. W. Atkins

Atkins does know how to explain Chemistry's Periodic table different from other teachers. Written a long time back this book has only 90+ elements - not that I care. Now we have 118.

He discusses the elements as though they are new countries that were discovered from time to time and each region in periodic table assigned regions like western desert ,lake and other geographic analogies.

When I read more I will post more on this approach.

I also have another book on this subject that I am reading

The disappearing spoon : and other true tales of madness, love, and the history of the world from the periodic table of the elements / Sam Kean.

Sam kean knows his stuff - he starts with elements and write stories about people . The People who worked on these elements! Take this woman - Lisa Meitner for example - she refused to work on atomic bomb!!

A 1997 Physics Today study concluded that Meitner's omission was "a rare instance in which personal negative opinions apparently led to the exclusion of a deserving scientist" from the Nobel.[9] Element 109, meitnerium, is named in her honour.[10][11][12]

In the meantime what did the Russians do for chemistry?

Wiki Quotes about this specific Russian as

The Russian chemist and science historian Lev Chugaev has characterized him as "a chemist of genius, first-class physicist, a fruitful researcher in the fields of hydrodynamics, meteorology, geology, certain branches of chemical technology (explosives, petroleum, and fuels, for example) and other disciplines adjacent to chemistry and physics, a thorough expert of chemical industry and industry in general, and an original thinker in the field of economy." Mendeleev was one of the founders, in 1869, of the Russian Chemical Society. He worked on the theory and practice of protectionist trade and on agriculture.

For his predicted eight elements, he used the prefixes of eka, dvi, and tri (Sanskrit one, two, three) in their naming. Mendeleev questioned some of the currently accepted atomic weights (they could be measured only with a relatively low accuracy at that time), pointing out that they did not correspond to those suggested by his Periodic Law. He noted that tellurium has a higher atomic weight than iodine, but he placed them in the right order, incorrectly predicting that the accepted atomic weights at the time were at fault. He was puzzled about where to put the known lanthanides, and predicted the existence of another row to the table which were the actinides which were some of the heaviest in atomic mass. Some people dismissed Mendeleev for predicting that there would be more elements, but he was proven to be correct when Ga (gallium) and Ge (germanium) were found in 1875 and 1886 respectively, fitting perfectly into the two missing spaces.[13]

By giving Sanskrit names to his "missing" elements, Mendeleev showed his appreciation and debt to the Sanskrit grammarians of ancient India, who had created sophisticated theories of language based on their discovery of the two-dimensional patterns in basic sounds

4. How can you teach Chemistry in the internet era to your kid and the kid in you?

There are several ways to learn about periodic table today (inspired by http://waterhouseguild.com/seven-ways-to-the-wonders-of-chemistry/)

1. Videos  about every element
http://www.periodicvideos.com/videos/003.htm

Read this link to learn how to learn Periodic table elements

2.Video about specific experiments

3. Flash cards - available in amazon.com and other internet retailers

4. Great books other than the boring academic ones (I have quoted 2 in this blog)

5.Posters - large one and kid friendly ones

6. Actual lab work and lab experiments at home including washing dirty dishes and hands (which can help how soap can clean dirt!!)

If you any suggestions or comments on other ways to teach or learn chemistry or any interesting fact about chemistry please let me know.

Blog Post #76 - White Bear,Stale Popcorn,Choclate &Radish, Basket Ball game - 4 experiments that are commonly referred in books

Most of the books I read about will power, habits and other useful topics that involves how our mind works keep pointing to few specific experiments so I thought I will share 4 of them

1. Don't think about a white bear

Daniel Wegner  and his fellow researchers told people not to think about white bear. Yes - a white bear. Did you think about a white bear now?
Ironic Process Theory as it is called is a way to induce a thought . Your mind has to first think and visualize what it should not think and you end up thinking about it.

It is like I am trying to pick up trash. You are either picking up thrash or not picking up thrash. Trying is our way of saying I am in the process of picking up - that means you are picking up and thus not doing the act of not picking up.

Sounds complex. What else did you think it should be? These people do research for ages and you think it is easy to understand their study?

Now don't think about pink elephant and do support breast cancer awareness.

2. Stale Popcorn study -
Large portions push people to overeat -- even to overeat foods they don't like.
This famous experiment proves that the container matters!
These movie goers were served stale popcorn and both medium and large containers with 5 days old popcorn were eaten by the participants without their knowledge (and it didn't matter which movie either - started with payback and they have tried this with lots of movies and in different cities - the results are always the same)

Next time in a movie theater if any one offers free popcorn be aware that it might be a case study!!

Read about this at -

3. Roy Baumeister - The Chocolate-and-Radish Experiment That Birthed the Modern Conception of Willpower

One set of Participants were given freshly baked cookies and the other set was asked to just smell them and eat Radish. After this there were given hard unsolvable puzzles to solve and the participants who ate Radish performed poor. So Radish is bad for brain ? -no. These participants who wanted to eat and liked cookies who were also hungry were using their willpower to resist cookies and so when it came to hard puzzles after that they couldn't use these 'muscles'

His theory  can be translated as - you have fixed will power for a day. When you use it for one task you don't have it for another task.

Example - Politicians who work hard and decide on hard issues and use tactics/other persuasion 'means'  to meet their end have low will power at the end of the day that they end up as client 9(google for client 9 to read about Eliot Spitzer)

This details about this case study is available at
http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/04/the-chocolate-and-radish-experiment-that-birthed-the-modern-conception-of-willpower/255544/

4.  Basket ball game

Do you like basket ball?
Really?

Watch this video and make sure you count the passes between the team with white shirt only and not the black shirt.White only.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo

How many passes did they do? 13? 14?15?

So you counted the passes.
Were you close?
If you were close to the answer which is 15 you will be asking not be able to answer this question ' What did the Gorilla do in the video?'

Selective attentiveness is the subject of this study. When you zoom in you miss the big picture. When you zoom out you lose the details.

You count the passes and I will see the Gorilla!!! - is how one author referred to in a book called 'Now you see it"

Paying attention is a problem.

I know that is why you didn't pay attention when you were in your calculus class. Atleast did you see the Gorilla? Did I tell you about the monkey in my class when we were taught advanced calculus ?- If I did good for you , if I didn't good for you.

Now read about this study at
