Blog Post #85 - Veda - Yoga, Ayurveda and 6 Questions!!!

Before I introduce you 6 questions let me give you a sneak preview into the world of Vedas and Vedanta

( I don't know much - but this is interesting stuff so learn more in the internet if you have interest in this field and treat this as a teaser!)

The 6 Questions in Questions are in Upanishads which belong to Vedanta.

Vedas and Vedanta form the core of sacred(and secret) text for Hinduism

Vedas - 4 in number .
Vedanta contains
      Brahma Sutras
      Upanishads
      Bhagavat Gita

Upanishads which are 11-108 in number depending on your search engine!!

The next time asks about Bhagavat Gita as Holy Text for Hindus you can let them know it is part of vedanta and there are  more than 110 such books!

Rig Veda - remember this as 'Praise' Veda - praises demigods including Fire(Agni), Water/Cloud(Indira), Air(Vayu) and a lot more scripts about life and prosperity (Why else would Humans pray?). These prayers have Iranian connection (google it)

Yajurveda - Mostly ceremonial and sacrificial. Used during marriage and lots of festivals.

Sama Veda - Treat this as musical praise - melody (Songs!!!- easiest way to reach people) ,
Not surprisingly Some Songs are called as SamaGanam (Gaman = Song)

Atharvaveda - This is the only veda named after a man - Atharvan. Conspiracy theory holds that these were prayers of Indigenous People (Whatever it means!!- people who lived before these people who wrote these vedas). From Black Magic to Boing Flight construction (kidding - Vimanas which were vehicles going up down and around are mentioned many a times in the texts) to medical cures there are slew of topics covered here.

For all you Yoga freaks and Ayurveda fans all these are coming from Atharvaveda

Clearly a lot had come to India from Arabian Horses to Chariots to Naan to Holy Texts through the Aryans. We don't know who these people were and how they organized Indian Society into classes but they did acquire a lot of knowledge on their way and expanded it.

Vedanata -  This was an attempt to end all confusion about Vedas. Meant to be a great text that in my opinion stopped Indians from becoming Buddhist or Jains and held them as Hindus.

Upanishads has many questions - one of my favorite being

"Mix water and Salt. Drink the mixture - salty? yes. Now where is the salt? - Inside the water. Or is Water inside Salt molecules." - If you answer the question using Chemistry - use the same Knowledge to answer God .

Is God inside you or are you part of God?

Once you succeed in understanding the answer to questions like these look at the following 6 questions from
Prasna Upanishad (Prasna means Questions! so this Upanishads is named aptly)

Prana below refers to Life/Breath
Purusha below refers to human
OM refers to sound of the pranava ..

  • From where (which root) these people are born ?"
  • How many divine elements hold the body?, which among them makes body living?, who is great among them?
  • From whom Prana originates? How does he come into body? How does he stay by dividing himself? How he leaves the body? How he supports outer and inner worlds?
  • "Which elements in Human being actually sleep? Which are awake at that time (while sleeping) ? Among these who sees the dream, who feels bliss in it? In whom all these elements merge finally as their final destination?
  • What fruit does one get who regularly meditates on holy syllable OM till his/her death ?
  • Who is "Shodashakala Purusha" or "Person with sixteen divine attributes".

While you may not figure out what are 16 divine attributes you can think about the other 5 questions.

Keep thinking
